How To Setup Your Shure SM7B

Hey everyone, Austin here with Partners in Post, and today I want to talk to you about setting up your in-studio microphone. We've had a few clients ask us how to get this set up so that they can record VO, podcasts and just have better zoom/virtual calls. And it is pretty simple, you're gonna want to go to B&H and buy yourself a Shure SM7B broadcaster package, this will include your microphone, your boom arm, and your cloud lifter.

The cloud lifter is a little device that boosts the gain 25 decibels. So without it, you're not going to be loud enough to hear. Then you're gonna need your audio interface. We use the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 which uses USB-C and will plug directly into your computer. And from there, it's basically plug and play.

You have to make sure that you're 48-volt phantom power is on, and then the little gain knob will be your volume control for your microphone. So when you're using your headphones to monitor, you can use this to make sure that the audio levels are where you'd like them. And it also has a place where you can monitor your audio with a quarter-inch (6.35mm) jack. It doesn't use your typical 3.5mm headphone jack so you will need an adapter. But as you record, you will be able to notice any problems that are happening on the fly. Other than that, you're good to go!
