3 Microphone, 3 Budgets
Hey there, today I want to talk to you about three different microphones for three different budgets.
Generic Amazon microphone - $24.99
The first mic we're talking about is the cheapest of the three. This is just a simple generic lav mic that you can buy on Amazon. We often tell people to check out the reviews and make sure that other people are using it and they like it. We are plugging this into the iPhone, using an iPhone adapter.
Remember whenever you're doing this, to make sure that you get a certified adapter for your lav microphone. This will make sure that it's compatible. We've had issues where some devices, for example, an iPad won't work with the generic USB adapter dongle. But these are cheap and very easy to get.
RODE WIRELESS GO - $199.00
Next up on the list is the Rode Wireless Go! This is a really awesome package. It's super portable, it's tiny, it's rechargeable, and it also has a lav input. So if you already have a really nice lav system, you can put this in a pocket and just wire the lab up and run that just like you normally would with your DSLR. It's the smallest, really affordable, pretty bomb-proof, and a great wireless setup. I would highly recommend the road wireless go to most people.
SHURE SM7B Dynamic microphone - $399.00
Last but not least is our studio mic. This is the Shure SM7B dynamic microphone. It takes a little more knowledge to set up and you’ll need about $700 to get everything to make it work but you're gonna get the deepest clearest recordings of audio from this microphone. It's really popular and you can buy the whole package here on B&H.
Summary
So these are the three different levels of microphones. They all have different pros and cons and different applications depending on where and when you're shooting. But the video linked here will give you a good idea of sound quality and you can make your own decisions based on your needs. We do a lot of audio processing with different software like Izotope and Waves to reduce room tone and ambient noise like clicks, pops, that sort of thing so, if you have any questions, please reach out we would love to help you record better audio and thanks for reading!
